BENEFIT FOR THE YOUNG READERS COUNCIL MARCH 6 & 7 – Several Baseball Legends to Make Appearances to Support Charity.
The Plaza Hotel & Casino along with the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association is hosting a $10,000 Legends Charity Dinner and Blackjack Tournament March 6 and 7, 2009 to benefit the Young Readers Council. Attendees will not only have the opportunity to eat and play with numerous baseball legends, but will also have a chance to win $10,000 in cash prizes – all while benefiting a great cause for local kids. The star-studded event has scheduled appearances by Baseball Legends Gaylord Perry, Darrell Evans, Jon Warden, Jason Christiansen, Ethan Blackaby, Bert Campaneris, Ron Robinson, Mike Myers and many more.
The event begins March 6 at 6 p.m. with tournament registration, a cocktail reception and silent auction. The evening continues with the charity dinner and live auction hosted by Comedian and Magician Michael Finney from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. on March 7 followed by an awards ceremony at 5 p.m. Dinner is $75 per person, and the tournament entry fee is $125 per person. Along with the chance to mingle with baseball all stars, guests have the chance to bid on and potentially win auction items which includes autographed baseball memorabilia.
Tournament prizes include: First place prize of $5,000; second place prize of $1,500; third place prize of $1,000; fourth place prize of $1,000; fifth and sixth place prize for $750; seventh place through ninth place prizes of $500; and tenth place prize of $250.
The purpose of the Young Readers Council is to assist in raising the literacy rate. There are two methods the organization utilizes to achieve higher levels of literacy. First, they provide tutoring to children who are failing to read at proper grade levels, as determined by school norms. Second, they provide books to elementary school students to motivate and facilitate their desire to read.
