New Orleans-style Dixieland Jazz at Reed Whipple Cultural Center

      
Everyone is invited to enjoy New Orleans-style Dixieland jazz by the Mardi Gras Mambo band on Friday, Jan. 30, at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at $7 for all seats. Tickets are available by phone or at the center’s box office at 821 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Box office hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Call (702) 229-6211 for tickets and information.

The Mardi Gras Mambo band is led by Gary Queen. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Queen studied classical guitar at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He studied jazz guitar, arranging and composition at Boston’s Berklee College of Music. Afterward, he worked the theater circuit playing headliner acts and Broadway shows. He joined the touring company of “A Chorus Line” in 1979, and toured with the international company through 1983. Queen moved to Las Vegas in 1983 and began playing showrooms. He was a member of the Las Vegas Hilton Orchestra from 1987 through 1989. In 1988, he became an adjunct faculty member at the Community College of Southern Nevada, teaching class and private guitar lessons. He continues to perform in shows at Las Vegas venues.

Future concerts planned at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center include the Freedom Jazz Trio on Feb. 27 and The Shapiro Project on April 24.

The Reed Whipple Cultural Center, operated by the Arts & Community Events Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, offers a variety of classes and workshops, including youth theatre, youth art, pottery, ceramics, belly dancing, tap dancing, Irish step dance, Hawaiian hula, tap/ballet dancing, piano and voice lessons. Classes are value priced and affordable for the whole family. In addition to classes, the center also offers concerts, theatre performances and special events.
