75th Anniversary Of First Helldorado Western-Heritage Community Celebration

Everyone is invited to celebrate Las Vegas Helldorado Days, Thursday, May 13, through Sunday, May 17, in downtown Las Vegas. This year marks the 75th anniversary of Las Vegas’ first Helldorado western-heritage community celebration in 1934. Many community businesses, organizations and individuals have partnered with the city of Las Vegas and the Las Vegas Elks Lodge to make this expanded Helldorado celebration possible.

Thursday, May 14, will be locals’ night, featuring $5 admission to the Kids and Kowboys events – barrel racing, bull riding, mutton busting, dress the calf, and more fun events from 7 to 9 p.m. in the downtown rodeo arena. Buck-a-roo bucks offer a $2 discount on Thursday and Sunday, and can be picked up at any of the 21 Las Vegas Dunkin’ Donuts locations. The carnival, which also begins Thursday and continues through Sunday, will be held at the downtown rodeo arena grounds, located between Stewart and Mesquite avenues, from Sixth to Eighth streets. Carnival admission is $3, but free with the purchase of a rodeo ticket. Carnival and rodeo tickets will be available each night at the rodeo grounds.

The annual Helldorado parade is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. The parade will move north on Fourth Street from Charleston Boulevard to Ogden Avenue. Fireworks will follow the parade, launched from the parking garage at Fourth Street and Carson Avenue.

National Finals Rodeo 2008 champion team roper and Las Vegas native Randon Adams, 2008 champion steer wrestler Luke Branquinho, and 2007 champion saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy are expected to compete in the weekend rodeo events. The rodeo will begin at 7 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and immediately following the parade and fireworks on Saturday. PRCA rodeo tickets are priced at $12.50 for adults and $6.50 for youth 12 and younger. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Las Vegas Elks Lodge, located at 4100 W. Charleston Blvd., Monday through Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Advance tickets also can be purchased from local Harley-Davidson stores at 2605 S. Eastern Ave. and 7100 W. Sahara Ave.

Additional Helldorado events and attractions include a roundup party, vendors, poker tournament, contests, free concerts, and several other events, starting Wednesday, May 13.  See the entire schedule (below), as well as maps for the parade, rodeo grounds and parking, online at the city of Las Vegas Web site at www.lasvegasnevada.gov or at www.elkshelldorado.com.

Limited free parking is available at the Fremont Street Experience garage on Fourth Street at Carson Avenue (with validation), the Main Street Station on Main Street at Stewart Avenue, the El Cortez on Stewart Avenue at Seventh Street and the city of Las Vegas Stewart Avenue parking garage on Fourth Street at Stewart Avenue (Thursday from 5 p.m. to midnight and Friday from 5 p.m. to Sunday at midnight).
