Cultural arts series features FREE live performances and family-friendly activities.

The City of Henderson introduces the lineup for ArtBeat Presented by Target cultural arts series. The featured performing acts for the month of May include the United States Coast Guard Band; Henderson’s premier theater company, Theatre in the Valley; pianist Alpin Hong; and the high-energy, audience participation act of the Dueling Pianos. All four shows will take place at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District with performances beginning at 8 p.m. The event includes pre-show activities, such as art displays and children’s make & take crafts at 7 p.m. Admission is FREE.

United States Coast Guard Band

The United States Coast Guard Band, under the direction of Commander Kenneth W. Megan, appears in a special performance that includes star soloists, the celebrated Masters of Swing and majestic literature for wind ensemble. The concert will feature an entertaining arrangement of songs from the long-running Broadway favorite, “The Fantasticks,” trumpet soloists in “Under Gypsy Skies,” a collection of songs from Oscar-winning film scores, as well as works by John Philip Sousa, Jules Massenet and Samuel Barber.

The U.S. Coast Guard Band is the premier ensemble of the United States Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. In addition to annual regional tours in the United States, the Band has performed in the former Soviet Union, Canada, England, and in 2008 became the first premier American military band to tour Japan. When not touring, the Band is based at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.

Theatre in the Valley presents the comedy, The Second Time Around by Henry Denker, directed by Rob Dahl. The story follows the lives of a group of seniors, who find that you’re never too old to fall in love. *The performance may have adult content and may not be suitable for children.

Alpin Hong
May 21 at 8 p.m. u Pre-show at 7 p.m.

Pianist Alpin Hong will bring audiences of all ages to their feet with a concert that combines stunning technique, emotion and humor. His extensive classical training, matched with his background in skateboarding, snowboarding, martial arts, and videogames, forms a creative force unmatched in its youthful vivacity and boundless energy.

Hong will conduct a week-long residency program at Basic High School prior to his concert. He will feature some of Basic’s band, orchestra and chorus students in his Friday night performance.

Dueling Pianos
May 28 at 8 p.m. u Pre-show at 7 p.m.

The Dueling Pianos returns to Henderson with an action-packed show that encourages audience participation through song, dance and special requests. The dynamic duo has an extraordinary musical library of songs from a variety of genres including R&B, rock, hip hop, blues and country music.

Crowds of all age groups will enjoy listening to musical renditions by current Top 100 acts like Maroon 5 and fan favorites from such legends as Ray Charles, Billy Joel and Elton John, as well as hits by Hannah Montana’s Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Everyone will be on their feet for the hilarious “YMCA,” “Chicken Dance” and “Hokey Pokey” dances.
