WHAT: In celebration of Club Tattoo’s grand opening inside Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, daredevil magician Steve Wyrick will perform a terrifying “Death Drop” escape featuring Chester Bennington, co-owner of Club Tattoo and Linkin Park frontman.

DETAILS: At 8:30 p.m., members of the public are encouraged to head to the Miracle Mile Shops’ southern Las Vegas Boulevard entrance (by Hawaiian Tropic Zone) to witness a “Death Drop” escape performed by Daredevil Magician Steve Wyrick. Bennington, assisted by members of his new side project Dead by Sunrise, will lock and shackle Wyrick into one of the band’s equipment boxes.

Connected to a crane by only a few thin ropes, the box will be dangled over a bed of 500 flaming spikes 80 feet below. The ropes will then be set on fire, forcing Wyrick to make his escape before the last rope breaks and sends him plummeting to a fiery death. Wyrick will have to jump 20 feet off a burning box to a safety rope and rappel down while avoiding the spikes and tremendous heat. This type of escape has never been attempted by an illusionist anywhere in the world.

Jazz In The Park Celebrates Its 20th Year With Free Concerts In May And June 2009

The Jazz in the Park concert series celebrates its 20th year with the Clean Air Series, sponsored by Clark County’s Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management and Clark County Parks and Recreation. The free series will feature national acts such as Allen Toussaint on May 9, Delfeayo Marsalis on May 23 and The Sax Pack, starring Jeff Kasiwa, Kim Waters and Steve Cole, on June 6. Seating for those with picnic baskets, blankets and low-back chairs will begin at 7 p.m. with performances beginning at 8 p.m. at the Clark County Government Center Amphitheater, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Food vendors also will be available on site. Parking is free.

Allen Toussaint will kick off the series May 9 with tunes from his recently released album The Bright Mississippi. The CD comes close on the heels of Allen’s recent high-profile presence at the 2009 Grammy Awards where he was a featured interviewee in the Grammy Legends series. During the awards, Toussaint was honored with the prestigious Trustees Award and participated in the worldwide broadcast in a segment featuring Lil Wayne, Terence Blanchard and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The performance on May 23 has been dubbed the “Clean Air Festival” starring Delfeayo Marsalis of the famously talented Marsalis clan of professional musicians. Marsalis has been labeled one of the freshest modern voices on the trombone to arrive in the ’90s. He has toured internationally with legendary jazz artists Art Blakely, Abdullah Ibrahim, Elvin Jones, Slide Hampton and Max Roach as well as with his own modern jazz ensemble. In addition to the concert, environmental organizations will present information, clean green vehicles and plenty of surprises.

On June 6, The Sax Pack will conclude the series with high-energy saxophone technique that combines their individual styles and diverse backgrounds for a fresh approach to the music that inspired them all to become musicians – jazz. Highlights of the tour will feature original music written specifically for The Sax Pack as well as each saxophone player’s signature hits of classic funk, R&B and jazz tunes that get fans out of their seats.

The city of Las Vegas invites everyone to enjoy a western-themed spring celebration at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs on Saturday, April 4, from 12 to 4 p.m. Enjoy wagon and pony rides, a petting zoo, children’s activities, games, dancing and amusement rides.

Admission to the park and all activities will be free. Farmers’ market and food vendors will sell barbecue, hot dogs, funnel cakes, kettle corn and fresh fruits and vegetables. The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will present a family film at 8 p.m. each evening. Each film lasts about 90 minutes. Admission is free. The park is located at 7101 N. Buffalo Drive, between Deer Springs Way and Elkhorn Road. There are several parking lots within the park, with access off of Deer Springs and Buffalo. Centennial Hills Park offers giant steel sculptures of prehistoric animals that once roamed the area and accompanying educational signage; a playground with splash pad; soccer fields; dog runs; sand volleyball complex; horseshoe pits; a jogging/walking path; restrooms; picnic shelters for small groups and ramadas for larger groups, in addition to the outdoor grass amphitheatre with seating capacity for 3,500. Near the amphitheatre is the first fully Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant playground in Las Vegas. This boundless playground allows children of all abilities to play together. The playground is accessible for children with disabilities, with ramps and plays areas designed specifically to allow wheelchair access. The playground also is challenging for fully able children. It is built into a hillside with three levels accessible via ramps and bridges, and offers activity features conducive to those with disabilities.
