City Of Henderson Invites Locals To Participate In Winterfest Parade December 12 2009

WHAT:
Local bands, organizations, groups, businesses and individuals are invited to register now to march in the upcoming WinterFest Parade in Henderson. The theme for this year’s holiday procession is “Toys on Parade.” Cash prizes totaling $1,500 will be awarded for entries in two different categories including Best Overall Theme and Best Costume. It is FREE to participate. Cash awarded for creativity.

The parade is just one aspect of the three day WinterFest holiday celebration. The city’s annual event also features other family-friendly activities including, ice skating, Santa Claus visits and holiday entertainment from December 10-12.

“The Dolls Of Japan” Exhibit Opens In Henderson – Innovative Attraction Teaches Visitors Aspects Of Japanese Culture

WHAT:

“The Dolls of Japan” exhibit opens to the public, September 8. The attraction, sponsored by the City of Henderson and the Japan America Society of Nevada, celebrates the diversity of the arts, culture and traditions of the Japanese. Henderson is the only stop in the continental United States in 2009.

Clark County students, as well as members of the community, will have the opportunity to view 70 unique dolls dressed in traditional clothing, hairstyles and adornments. Museum curators from the Japan Foundation in Tokyo selected the most fascinating figurines including the Hina Ningyo (dolls of the Hina Festival) and Gogatsu Ningyo (dolls for the Boy’s Festival) to be displayed. The exhibit will serve as an educational tool for visitors to learn about the various characteristics of the Japanese culture.

City Of Henderson Gets Into The Aloha Spirit With Ho’Olaule’A Festival September 12-13 2009

Annual event showcases Pacific island culture, food and entertainment.

The City of Henderson continues its partnership with the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club to present the 19th annual Prince Jonah Kuhio Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival on September 12-13 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., daily. Admission and parking is free.

“Ho’olaule’a is one of Henderson’s most popular events,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “Every year thousands of people gather in the Water Street District to get a glimpse into what the island life has to offer.”

The Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival brings tropical island traditions, cuisine and entertainment to the mainland. Attendees will enjoy over 100 exotic food and craft vendors including a selection of unique culinary demonstrations, as well as two stages of live entertainment. Performances include an array of dance teams, hula groups and award-winning artists and bands, such as Kainani Kahaunaele and Las Vegas-based Ho’omanawanui.

This year, organizers have added a new cultural craft area to the event. Children are able to participate in several make and take demonstrations including the art of tea leaf braiding and stick instrument construction. Performers and demonstrations are subject to change.

The City of Henderson announces local country music group The Randy Anderson Band and classical pianist Alpin Hong will be the featured performing act for the ArtBeat presented by Target cultural arts series in September. The Randy Anderson Band will perform on Friday, September 4 at 8 p.m. and Alpin Hong will take the stage on Friday, September 18 at 8 p.m. Both shows will take place at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, in the Water Street District and will include pre-show activities such as art displays and children’s make & take crafts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
