Award-winning television and movie star Gary Sinise shows off his hard rockin’ musical side as he and his group, the Lt. Dan Band, pay tribute to the men and women of our nation’s armed services this Labor Day-weekend. The special one-night engagement will be held at The Club at the Cannery Casino & Hotel on Sunday, September 6 at 8 p.m.

Tickets start at $19.95 plus tax and fees and can be purchased at the Cannery Casino & Hotel’s ticket sales counter located at the front desk. Sinise is an internationally acclaimed actor, director and producer. A founding member of the famed Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Sinise has starred in numerous movies such as “Apollo 13,” “Of Mice and Men” and “Mission to Mars.” The role of Lt. Dan in “Forrest Gump” garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He also earned an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Harry S. Truman in the TV movie “Truman,” and won an Emmy for his starring role in the TV movie “George Wallace.” He is currently the star and producer of the CBS hit series “CSI:NY.”

The Lt. Dan Band was formed as a collaboration between Gary Sinise and Chicago composer Kimo Williams. Impressed by Sinise’s bass playing, Williams encouraged him to pursue his talent and the two began jamming and performing together. With Sinise’s extraordinary commitment to the USO, these gigs eventually led to performances for troops and their families. Following one of his many trips overseas to visit those serving our country, he decided it was time to bring the band with him. With William’s help, a talented group of musicians came together to form “The Lt. Dan Band.” The name comes from the character Sinise portrayed in the 1994 film “Forrest Gump.” As Sinise began visiting troops around the world, fans who didn’t know him by name would recognize him as “Lt. Dan.” Members of the military also seem to identify strongly with the character, thus the name for Sinise’s band became an easy choice.

The Lt. Dan Band covers everything from Springsteen to Linkin Park, from Aretha to Hendrix. There’s something for everyone, and each show highlights the musical diversity of the band, as well as the passion and energy each member brings to the stage. Whether they are performing for troops overseas or a local club crowd, the goal is to have fun and rock the house.

The El Cortez Hotel & Casino in downtown Las Vegas is extending its $15 free dining credit promotion through the end of September for all active U.S. military personnel as further appreciation and support for the U.S. Armed Forces.  This promotion, which began in August, provides a $15 dining credit valid at The Flame Steakhouse and Cafe Cortez to anyone presenting a valid active military ID during August and September.

Individuals are limited to one dining credit per day and no minimum purchase is required.

The Flame Steakhouse now features Idaho trout flown in fresh weekly for the Friday and Saturday night dinner special. The Idaho trout is served Amandine style and is only $16.95.  The Flame Steakhouse also offers the finest prime rib with a variety of hand-cut steaks, chicken and fresh seafood entrees.  The steakhouse is open daily from 4 to 10 p.m.

Annual event showcases Pacific island culture, food and entertainment.

The City of Henderson continues its partnership with the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club to present the 19th annual Prince Jonah Kuhio Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival on September 12-13 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 S. Water Street, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., daily. Admission and parking is free.

“Ho’olaule’a is one of Henderson’s most popular events,” said Andrea Primo, Director of the Cultural Arts & Tourism Department. “Every year thousands of people gather in the Water Street District to get a glimpse into what the island life has to offer.”

The Ho’olaule’a Pacific Islands Festival brings tropical island traditions, cuisine and entertainment to the mainland. Attendees will enjoy over 100 exotic food and craft vendors including a selection of unique culinary demonstrations, as well as two stages of live entertainment. Performances include an array of dance teams, hula groups and award-winning artists and bands, such as Kainani Kahaunaele and Las Vegas-based Ho’omanawanui.

This year, organizers have added a new cultural craft area to the event. Children are able to participate in several make and take demonstrations including the art of tea leaf braiding and stick instrument construction. Performers and demonstrations are subject to change.
